Feeding Time

Here is a little taste of our feeding time last night... this is a bit different than usual since it was a 'bone night'. Everyone was guarding a separate treat and came when called which is different than usual when they will follow me around like a pack until its their turn.

Thani is a bit different in that he will wait on his house but the others will circle around me until they get to eat. Things could get hectic if they weren't all trained to do this but we have virtually no fighting or impatience from anyone since everyone has their own house and they know when its their turn to eat. The fighting you do hear is a squabble over a bone over by the sled shed. I also always walk the dog houses the same way every time.

Mandy is the one who is barking. She is in the foster/boarder pen and she gets really excited when food is coming around. Other than that this is about as loud as it gets at feeding time.

Boreas gets a little too excited so he has to either sit or lay down before his food comes and you can see Mercury contentedly munching away on his bone off to the right. Since he is in the pen he is eighth dog to be fed so he usually waits until I get closer to the back. Some dogs will also bring their bones to their own houses which helps me a lot. For those that leave them behind I will go around after feeding and collect the extras giving everyone a piece so they can munch on them the rest of the night...

Water is also given out after they have had their food. The process is very much the same with the 'bait' varying each evening. Tonight they had salmon skin, chicken fat and chicken broth! Mmmm...
