Went about ten miles and the dogs were starting to peeter out at the end. Feels like the beginning of the season with where they are at. I'm sure I can get them back up to speed soon but its a bit discouraging knowing we had to go back so far being off the trail for so long. Nothing changed about their speed though as you can see in the video. Everyone was really fast and I had them take numerous breaks just to make sure they didn't hurt themselves.
One of those breaks was by a fresh moose calf killed by a wolf or wolves. I had never run upon a carcass that fresh so it must have died an hour or so before we got there. The wolves were no where to be found but the tracks were fresh and the momma moose was still hanging around. The dogs were good about passing it and that says a lot considering it was only about three feet from the trail.
In the video you can see how much Gaea has grown. Shes running along loose beside the team but falls quickly behind when she does a face plant in the snow... shes a riot!
Unfortunately we wont be able to get out until Monday. We have new fosters arriving tomorrow and my birthday to quietly celebrate on Sunday, even though its tomorrow. Would have loved to do a mushing trip as a birthday present but I never want to rush things on the trail and I'm expecting the fosters to show up around 3:00. Puts a dent in our trail plans but its an excuse to get more work done so I can be extra free for Mondays trip.
The new foster, Laya, is so sweet and working out really well. The other two who are coming are also extremely sweet and will do great here I think. I'm anxious to work them into the team one at a time and fill us out to 11 or 12 dogs so we can push the trails through even more.
I was also able to adopt a big male rooster from the shelter to accompany our hens. He took right away to one hen in particular and the two are very happy for each others company. I will post a photo of him here, he is extremely beautiful and quite large... bigger than the girls even!
