Tried and Failed

Tried to work in the office today... James had a great idea of keeping the gate open so the dogs could choose the coolest parts of the house. That would have been ideal if they would have done that!
Poor things, every one except Chronos and Gaea wanted to stick to me like glue despite being so hot. Im flattered that we continue to be bonded like we are but right now all I want is for them to be comfortable and not to sacrifice their peace of mind just to be with me... but maybe that is their peace of mind...

Boreas tries his best to stay cool on the office couch.

I stayed in the office as long as I could, maybe 15 minutes, before I couldnt stand it. Its a lot to ask of a person acclimated to our extremes to live in 70-80 degrees even for a short time. Seems silly to those in the warmer states but if youve been here as long as I have high temperatures like that are plain miserable!

Griffin rests at the office gate stubornly refusing to go downstairs where its much cooler.

There is a forecasted break coming... On the NOAA site it states that Friday will be a high of -30 and a low of -35. Thats a ways off considering its Monday so I wouldnt be surprised if it changed back down to bitter cold. Right now its -44 but tonights prediction is -40 to -60 with Tuesday having more of the same.

I dont remember it ever being this cold for this long. Usually we will have a day of -50 then four days of -40, a break then another cold snap a week or so later. We usually have two to three weeks of bad stay at home weather spread out over January and February. This time it seems that all our bad weather grouped together and is hammering us all at once. Id like to think this is the worst of it and that the rest of our winter wont be as extreme but I doubt that will be the case.

Its the breaks in the cold that keep us going. The dogs enjoy the warmer temps (even if its only -30) and those who havent felt like eating can gain weight again and restore their mental attitude to work through the next cold snap. This time no one is getting much of a break.

Last night was another night spend in with 'the herd'. We are all getting the hang of our sleeping patterns and doing the best we can. James gives me a good night kiss before heading up to bed as I settle in on the couch for another night of interupted sleep.

Ive often wondered if Im missing out on important life lessons of raising human children but I honestly think Im learning it all through my dogs. At 5am every morning they all get restless and one by one Im kissed or gently pawed awake by someone. I think they take turns...

They all do a quick pee run and come back in for a few more hours of sleep. I am woken at least three more times before we all get up by someone growling, getting stepped on or some other disruption that I cant see in the dark. I guess a person can get used to anything as I seem to be getting quality sleep when Im not being disturbed and when I have to get up I can go right back to dreaming without too much effort.

My dreams have been particularly interesting and in waking up so many times Ive been able to remember quite a few of them...

Here are a few of the photos James took last night during the dogs dinner time. This shows the routine we do twice a day when they get their breakfast and later on their dinner. Dry kibble is given to every one inside except for the three dogs in the crates who have their food soaked and a little bit of high calorie food just in case they dont feel like eating. They get almost the exact same as the ones outside.

To help maintain peace I feed all the dogs in the order they are fed in the yard. If they know when their turn is coming they are more likely to not be so pushy.

Here you can see Griffin eating in the right hand corner (in the photo above) and Boreas also diging in right in front of me. Thani waits to my right as I call his name and put his bowl on the floor.

Griffin, Hermes and Chronos finish up their food with Calypso just out of view on the left while Thani (who already cleaned his bowl) asks silently for handouts. The house dogs, Spock, Juno and Buddy start getting pushy when they know their time is near. Mercury looks on waiting for me to get close enough to lower his bowl while Gaea waits patiently for her turn.

Boreas, now finished eating gets a bit pushy though he knows hes already eaten his share. Thani looks on from behind as Spock waits for his food to be dished out as soon as one of the other dogs is finished and frees up a bowl. Juno looks on intently knowing her turn is up next.

Ajax eats last up on the counter were he wont get stepped on. Gaea looks on hoping for Ajax to drop some kibble her way.
