The Week of Work

I was hoping to sneak away at least one day this week to get on the trails with the dogs but I'm still so swamped with work. If we didn't have the Art Expo show this weekend things could be much more flexible.

James and I have been very busy on the rental house spending most evenings over there painting and replacing fixtures, sinks, toilets, doors, you name it... the place isn't all that old but I bet that most of the stuff in there was put in when it was built.

If we want to get a nice chunk of land down south it would really help to get as much as we can for the place, even though land is relatively cheap down there. It is my dream to have 40 acres but we can settle with something around 20 and still be very happy.

The weather for this time of year has been maddening. I can handle the cold but the wind... ugh! I didn't move to Nome for that very reason!

Its been blowing through here steadily and even though its not as forceful as it can be its made things downright cold. Some nights the windchill has set our temperature at -45! This is still March right? Did I miss something?

For the past few nights its been -25 and -30. I worry about the dogs being that cold this late in the season since I was waiting to do their straw change out when it warmed up. Soooo, when is it going to warm up? Global warming rocks!! : )

During the day the temperature raises up a bit above zero (some days much warmer) so the dogs are able to get a mental break from the cold. I brought Hermes in for one of those colder days so he could warm up. I know he can survive out there just fine but his coat is thinner than the other pups and I know how wonderful it is to get a few hours of solid sleep, which he did. Some times I can walk right by him and he will stay sleeping... that's a big deal for a dog as sensitive as he is.

Most of the dogs started their shed weeks ago. Normally I'm all set to collect their fur and stockpile for future Husky Hair Hats but I'm wondering how long they will be able to use it before it falls to the ground and is lost. I brush everyone easily this time of year but since its been so cold Ive been very hesitant to do that.

Griffin has enough to spare though so I brought him in yesterday to collect a bit off his legs and belly. Mercury hasn't dropped any of his while Calypso and Thani have already started their shed.

This weather has been so weird!
