Blessings of Eggs and Coffee

Seems a silly little thing to focus on but I have found such a delight in the eggs we have been getting from our chickens over the years. It amazes me that a human body can thrive so well on eggs, cheese and a bit of veggies or that such a wonderful package of protein can come out of such a simple animal.

We rarely run to the grocery store for supplies after the chickens moved in. Since there is always canned milk to cook from, flour and sugar in the pantry and eggs from our wonderful girls there is little we find we are without... well, there is the ice cream issue. Now if we can find an animal who can produce ice cream on demand we would be set!!

The girls are settling into their new winter digs very well and they all really like the new nest option that I keep well stocked with straw from the dog yard supply. This years youngsters have almost all started producing but they are still adjusting to the colder temperatures and the lack of light in the garage so they are a bit slow on production. They are making enough for us now but extras for the dogs will have to wait just a bit longer.

I also ordered some LED stick up lights for the inside of their coup. These will be great in that they produce low heat, take up less energy and will provide a nice bright light for the girls to lay by. I'm anxious to see how this helps with their production levels.

Ive never been one to demand production for the sake of high quantity in any animal, our aging and somewhat non-productive older hens are testament of that, but I have always been fascinated in how things work, learning new things and problem solving.

These chickens have provided me with so much information to learn from and they feed us at the same time. What a great partnership!! :)
