We had another training run today to prepare for our clients showing up early tomorrow in the morning to take the same trip. We took the bulk of our load out today, dog snacks, human food, straw, water, etc... now we will have plenty of room for our guests in the sled bags and not as much weight to haul in.
There are a few hills to climb and some overflow to negotiate but Im sure the dogs and mushers will handle everything well. Its always fun to go on an adventure and even more enjoyable to share it with folks new to the sport.
With todays run being only the second time the team and I have headed out to her place I was extremely pleased to see our little Calypso remember where our turns were the whole way out. She even took a turn before I saw it coming that the leaders had missed!
And since we had so much dog power (even though my sled had over 200lbs in it!) Calypso got to run loose most of the time and show me how great she was staying on the trail and waiting for us to catch up. She used to do that when she was a pup and its nice to see shes still doing it as an adult.
On the way back out her and Juno were our crossing guards of sorts. Since a large part of the run takes place on a logging road there is always a chance we will have to pass by a truck hauling wood. There are a few tight turns that the team are able to see around before I can. Having Calypso out front, and later Juno as well, helped give any drivers an advance warning of our team coming up from behind. Those girls did a great job and the rest of the team were able to come around the truck really easy.
Tomorrow is going to be a early and long day so I have to cut this short. Got to get to bed to get up in time for packing and meeting our clients at the trailhead.
