Crazy weather this week. We are barely getting to the end of February and are experiencing warm weather that we shouldnt be having for at least another month.
Every year its something different, one season we had rain right in the middle of winter and we do have thawing periods occassionally but this is pretty extreme. I think its more frustrating to see after being spoiled for so long with extended winters and the ability to mush on into April.
There isn't much we can do about it but go along with the flow and hope for the best. We have another ride tomorrow and the temperature is going to be well above freezing. The dogs may have trouble with the warmer weather but we will take lots of breaks and make sure they get lots of snow to cool them down.
We also have another ride coming up this next weekend where we hope to take advantage of the hilly trails out where Nita lives but with the daytime temperature being 60+ in those higher elevations we will have to play it by ear.
Along with the rides we have been working on our Sled Dogs in Schools program to get our foster dogs in the classroom and encourage children to look to rescuing a dog from a shelter rather than a pet store.
We have also been teaching them that if they arent ready to adopt that volunteering and donating to a shelter organization is still a wonderful step in the right direction.
Coyote and Polar were the first dogs to meet the kids and Carol Kleckner was a huge help talking to the kids. Sasha and Maude will probably be next to go in for our second week though Minnie is looking like she may want to try a group setting.
Being in the classroom for these guys is priceless. Its a great way for them to make new friends, for us to evaluate how they may work with children and, for those who cant enjoy the trail as much as the younger fosters, it gives the older guys a fun new place to be.
