Free Time

I'm not sure if more snow is headed our way... the temps are slowly rising during the day and the sky is very cloudy tonight. Our run on Monday may have been the last one of the season...

I can tell the pups are maturing quite a bit and getting used to the feeding routine, staying quiet and settling down for the night. Calypso has a very reduced appetite so its possible her growth is slowing down. She is getting three cups a day compared to her larger brothers getting four. I will reduce her by half or by one full cup and see if that changes her eating habits. She will also spend some time in tomorrow so I can observe her more carefully and make sure this isn't going to be a health issue.

Shes not skinny and not fat but this line has a history of picky eaters. Calypso has never been one to slack off food ever since she was a pup but it will come as no surprise if this is her way of maintaining her weight.

I am a little worried though... there has been a bug going around the kennel. Its minor and each dog that gets it has a loose stool for a day or so then is back to normal. Calypso may have the bug but her energy level isn't slowing down in the least. She really wanted to run tonight and dash around the yard... unfortunately tonight is mommas early to bed night so they will have to wait until tomorrow to kick up their heals.

Last night they had a nice long, fun, free romp around the yard. Everyone was on very good behavior and I only had to issue a warning once to a group who was playing a little too loudly in the dark area of the yard. I never know when vocalizations will escalate into a serious interaction so its best to stay wary in all cases, especially when I cant see their body language. This is something I hope to remedy this summer in expanding the range of our yard lights.

It dawned on me last night how well the kennel is working and how well the dogs are knowing their place. A total of 17 dogs were loose playing in the front part of the dog yard property and all were behaving so very well. When these guys run in their mini packs its quite a sight. There is enough land fenced off to get in some really great strides and all of them know the best tracks to really pick up their speed.

Ive noticed the pups playing more with the adults and Boreas is now getting in on the fun. First it was only Hermes but the rest are showing that they are strong enough to run and play with the adults and really hold their own. Seemed like only yesterday that they were sitting in the 'fast tracks' and getting knocked down by the adults speeding past.

Both of Thani's ears are now straight up and he is looking more like a young adult every day. He has such a regal look about him even at this age. Hes almost able to look me straight in the eye when standing on his hind legs. He still remains the largest pup of the litter with Boreas very close behind him...
